Turn your double-tier tropical waterfall fantasy into reality by visiting the gorgeous Wailua Falls. And speaking of fantasy, Wailua Falls was the opening scene of the long-running TV show Fantasy Island.
This is a great (and popular) place for visitors to enjoy. It was catapulted into the international spotlight back in the 1970’s by the Fantasy Island television series. It has also been widely utilized in print and other forms of media for decades as a symbol of Kauai’s lush beauty. And unlike many other Kauai waterfalls, Wailua Falls is easily accessible, as no hiking is needed to reach it and appreciate its beauty up close. The parking lot basically overlooks the falls. But the main reason the falls is so special is its beauty; when the sun hits at just the right angle you’ll get a beautiful rainbow extending out from the base of the falls in the mist, which is nothing short of spectacular.
Wailua Falls is approximately 85 ft. high- not 170+ ft. If you wish to get to the bottom of the falls (which the county advises against, as do we), then there are two trails which are unkept and deemed unsafe. You’ll notice the first trail by the guard rail at the end of the parking lot. This is the steeper and often muddier trail. We suggest avoiding this trail at all costs. If you head a little over a quarter of a mile back down the road, you’ll find an easier, less steep, and safer trail. It is longer than the first trail, but easier to hike. Please keep in mind that for safety reasons, the county advises against the hike. The signs erected at each trail are a testament to this fact.
